Some of the old Faroese tunnels are very narrow, and there’s always the risk of meeting one or two sheep inside as they seek shelter from the weather. The foremost sheep seen here has a Faroese knitting pattern on its chest.

This is an old-fashioned Faroese decked fishing boat used in the 20th century. The Sluppungi has the same shape as a smack boat, but is much smaller, and only a few of these old-timers remain. These boats are built in the Faroe Islands and are therefore distinctively Faroese. Originally they were open boats without a wheelhouse.

Ull er Föroya gull (Wool is Faroese Gold) is an old Faroese saying. In the old days wool from sheep was very valuable. There were many people who were poor and did not have enough wool to knit sweaters and clothes for the family. In a cold climate this was a question of survival, so many poor people had to walk around the mountains to pick up wool that other people’s sheep had shed. If you were lucky enough to find wool, it was as good as finding gold.
